Assemblywoman Solages Appointed Chair of Task Force on Food, Farm & Nutrition Policy

From farm to fork, Solages will advocate for nutritional needs of New Yorkers

Elmont, NY – Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages announced her new appointment as Chair of the Assembly Task Force on Food, Farm and Nutrition Policy.

“As the newly appointed Chair of the Assembly Task Force on Food, Farm and Nutrition Policy, I look forward to not only supporting our local food and regional market supply but also ensuring all New Yorkers have access to healthy foods,” said Assemblymember Solages.

As a voice for the nutritional needs of preterm infants, Assemblymember Solages was successful in enacting laws that require Medicaid and private insurance companies to cover the cost of donor breast milk for preterm infants. Human milk provides the optimal nutrition for term infants as well as recommended for preterm infants in helping reduce the risk of developing life-threatening infections. “No mother, regardless of socioeconomic status, should have to be without the necessary resources to protect the health of their child,” stated Assemblymember Solages.

In her new role within Assembly leadership, Michaelle will continue to focus on policy that enhances the nutritional education of pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women as well as infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.

A recent report published by Feeding America, the national hunger relief organization representing 194 food banks across the country, describes a 27.2% increase in the estimated number of Long Island children experiencing food insecurity.

“Far too many children and adults have faced or are currently facing periods of food insecurity. This task force will seek to promote food justice for all New Yorkers by empowering communities in their efforts to fight against hunger,” declared Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages.
