Snowmobile Trail Grant Program

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP)

The Snowmobile Trail Grant Program establishes a mechanism for allocating funds to local government sponsors that engage in the development and maintenance of snowmobile trails designated as part of the State Snowmobile Trail System.
ELIGIBILITY:  Applications may be filed by local sponsors, defined as a municipal government (county, town or village) that agrees to compile grant applications from within its jurisdiction, agrees to develop one grant application, and is responsible for ensuring compliance with the program and submission of all paperwork.
FUNDING:   The annual funding is allocated to local government sponsors on a pro-rated basis. The pro-rated amount is derived from the application and is paid out with a 70% "Grant-in-Aid" followed by a 30% reimbursement to the municipality upon documentation of 100% of the awarded total cost.
DEADLINE:  To be eligible to receive funds, an application must be received by September 1, 2005.

The Arts on Radio and Television

National Endowment for the Arts

Through this category, the NEA seeks to make the excellence and diversity of the arts widely available to the American public through nationally distributed television and radio programs. Grants are available to support the development, production, and national distribution of radio and television programs on the arts. Projects may include high profile multi-part television and radio series, single documentaries, performance programs, or arts segments for use within an existing series. Programs may deal with any art form, e.g. visual arts; music; dance; literature; design; theater; musical theater; opera; film/video/audio art; folk; and traditional arts.
ELIGIBILITY:   State governments; county governments; city or township governments; special district governments; independent school districts; public and state controlled institutions of higher education; Federally-recognized Native American tribal governments; nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education; and private institutions of higher education.
FUNDING:   Grants will range from $20,000 to $200,000.

Graffiti Hurts National Award Program

Keep America Beautiful

Keep America Beautiful, a nonprofit public education and community improvement organization, is accepting entries for the Graffiti Hurts National Award program to recognize programs that are bringing innovation and best practices to erase graffiti vandalism. Graffiti Hurts, a community-based graffiti prevention program developed in 1997 through a partnership between Keep America Beautiful and the Sherwin-Williams Company, provides resources to help community leaders assess the graffiti problem, initiate graffiti prevention activities, and educate youth and adults about the impact of graffiti vandalism on neighborhoods. The program is open to all anti-graffiti projects that have taken place within the last twelve months.
ELIGIBILITY:  Nonprofit, civic, and community organizations; youth groups and schools; government agencies; and business and professional organizations.
FUNDING:   Funding is available in three award categories: 1) $1,000 cash award for communities under 100,000 population; 2) $1,000 cash award for communities over 100,000; and 3) $500 cash award for Paint Brush Mural awards for projects that use one or more paint brush mural(s) to respond to persistent graffiti.

Grants for Addressing Childhood Language Disorders

Bamford-Lahey Children's Foundation

The Bamford-Lahey Children's Foundation was established in July 2000 for the purpose of conducting and supporting programs that will enhance the linguistic, cognitive, social, and emotional development of children. The Foundation's Program for Childhood Language Disorders funds projects that have broad implications for the learning and use of spoken language in children with developmental language disorders. Interested parties must submit a one or two page letter-of-inquiry to the Foundation at info@Bamford-Lahey.org. Selected applicants will be invited to submit additional information in a fully developed proposal.
ELIGIBILITY:  Hospitals, universities and public schools.
FUNDING:   Maximum award is $20,000.
DEADLINE:  Twice a year, September 15 for decisions made in February, and February 15 for decisions made in July.

Melody Program

Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation

The Melody Program is designed to provide musical instruments and instrument repairs to existing K-12 school music programs that have no other source of financing to purchase additional musical instruments and materials.
ELIGIBILITY:  K-12 school music programs that have been ongoing for at least three years. Contact the Foundation for additional eligibility requirements.
FUNDING:   The Foundation does not make cash awards. Grants of instruments and instrument repairs range between $500 and $5,000. Awarded instruments may be both new and refurbished.
DEADLINE:   The Foundation accepts grant applications throughout the year.

Educational Nutrition Programs

The Allen Foundation

The Allen Foundation supports educational nutrition programs, with priority given to training programs for children and young adults to improve their health and development. The Foundation's priorities are to 1) fund relevant nutritional research; 2) support programs for the education and training of mothers during pregnancy and after the birth of their children, so that good nutritional habits can be formed at an early age; 3) assist in the training of persons to work as educators and demonstrators of good nutritional practices; 4) encourage the dissemination of information regarding healthful nutritional practices and habits; and 5) make grants, in limited situations, to help solve immediate emergency hunger and malnutrition problems.
ELIGIBILITY:  Non-profit organizations with IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. In certain circumstances, the Foundation will consider requests from hospitals or medical clinics; social, religious, fraternal, or community organizations; private foundations; and K-12 public, parochial or private schools.
FUNDING:   Past grants have ranged from $2,000 to $1,000,000.

Sustainable Community Grants

Northeast SARE Program

The Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program will be offering Sustainable Community Grants. The purpose of this new grant effort is to reconnect rural revitalization and farming on a local level, and projects can address issues such as land use, nutrition, employment, markets, education, farm labor, public policy, and environmental quality.
ELIGIBILITY:  Community nonprofits, cooperative extensions, local governments, educational institutions, planning boards, farming cooperatives, and incorporated citizens' groups.
FUNDING:    Awards will be capped at $10,000 and most projects will generally run about a year, but mulityear proposals are permitted.
DEADLINE:   November 18, 2005.

Teacher Grants

SHOPA Kids in Need Foundation

The mission of the SHOPA Kids in Need Foundation is to recognize, promote, and support initiatives that foster educational excellence. Kids in Need Teacher Grants provide K-12 educators with funding to help them realize their dreams of providing innovative learning opportunities for their students. The Foundation helps to engage students in the learning process by supporting our most creative and important educational resource - our nation's teachers. National sponsors of the Kids in Need Teacher Grants are Jo-Ann Stores and Office Depot, and regional sponsors include Fred Meyer, Publix, and Price Less Drug Stores.
ELIGIBILITY:  Certified K-12 teachers at public, private, or parochial schools in the United States.
FUNDING:    More than $105,000 is being offered, with grants ranging from $100 to $500.
DEADLINE:   September 30, 2005.

The Grantsmanship Center

The Grantsmanship Training Program is coming to New York: Potsdam, August 22-26, 2005, hosted by SUNY Potsdam. The classes will be conducted by The Grantsmanship Center and are kept at a maximum of 30 participants. The cost is $825, which includes one-year enrollment in the TGCI Membership Program. A limited number of half-tuition scholarships are available to agencies with annual budgets of less than $300,000. The Foundation Center

The Foundation Center has scheduled a Proposal Writing Seminar.

Attendees of the Proposal Writing Seminar will learn, among other things, techniques for writing proposals, how to foster working relationships with grantmakers, how to resubmit a grant proposal, and how to develop an organized, focused approach to conducting funding research on the Web. The class costs $195.
