On the state level...
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is providing financial assistance
for projects that enhance municipal recycling infrastructure through purchasing equipment
or constructing facilities. Examples of what the funding may be used for include building
state-of-the-art composting facilities, or buying recycling containers and/or new recycling
vehicles. In addition, the DEC is also providing financial assistance for recycling coordinator
salaries and for public education programs conducted by municipalities. This funding can help
expand local recycling and waste reduction programs and increase participation.

Funding: The funding for this grant has been reduced in
recent years. Applicants will be placed on a waiting list to be reviewed for
eligibility upon availability of funding. Contact the Department of Environmental
Conservation for more information.

NYSERDA
The New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA)
is accepting applications for its New Construction Program. Funding is available
to enhance the energy efficiency of new and renovated buildings. Money is available
to conduct technical reviews of energy efficiency improvements in building designs
and to offset a portion of capital costs to purchase and install energy efficient equipment.
Additional incentives for green buildings and industrial & process efficiency are available.

Eligibility: State and local government, businesses, not-for-profit
and private institutions, public and private schools, colleges and universities, multifamily
buildings, and health care facilities.

Funding: A total of $83 million is available.

On the federal level...
National Institutes of Health
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR)
at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are offering funding opportunities to encourage either
new investigators to enter the field of cancer-related behavioral research or investigators who
want to refocus their research toward behavioral research in cancer control. NIH seeks to
increase the number of scientists nationwide who have research experience in behavioral
cancer control and design of public health interventions. This grant is also being offered to
support research on transfer of behavioral science knowledge into cancer control practice.

depend upon quality, duration and costs of applications received.

Solid Waste Management Grant, United States Department of Agriculture
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is providing grants to assist with solid waste management. Eligible organizations seeking assistance in the following areas are encouraged to apply: evaluating current landfill conditions to determine threats to water resources in rural areas; providing technical assistance and/or training to enhance operator skills in the maintenance and operation of active landfills in rural areas; providing technical assistance and/or training to help associations reduce the solid waste stream; and providing technical assistance and/or training for operators of landfills in rural areas which are closed or will be closed in the near future with the development/implementation of closure plans, future land use plans, safety and maintenance planning, and closure scheduling within permit requirements.

On the private level...
William T. Grant Foundation
The William T. Grant Foundation is accepting letters of inquiry for its Investigator-Initiated
Grants program. The program’s research focus is on how youth settings work, how they
affect youth development, and how they can be improved. It also funds work on how
research evidence is used in public policy and how its use can be improved. Youth
settings include environments with clear boundaries such as classrooms, schools, and
youth organizations and those with less prescribed boundaries such as neighborhoods
or other settings in which youth interact with peers, family members, and other adults.
Typical awards are from $100,000 to $600,000, though some newly initiated experiments
receive grants up to $1.5 million.
American Federation for Aging Research Grants Program
The American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) is offering grants
for research projects investigating the basic mechanisms of aging. The
goal of the program is to support junior investigators who are committed
to pursuing careers in the field of aging research. AFAR supports projects
investigating age-related diseases, especially those that are linked to the
basic aging processes. Other projects that deal with mechanisms
underlying common geriatric functional disorders are also being accepted.

Eligibility: The applicant must be an independent
investigator with independent research space as described in an
offer/start-up letter and must be no more than 10 years beyond start
of postdoctoral research training as of July 1, 2012.

Funding: $100,000 for a one-to-two-year award

The Foundation Center has scheduled the following free training classes in
New York City during December 2011:
Grantseeking Basics: December 8, 16, 20
Attendees will learn how the center’s resources can help make them more effective grantseekers.
For beginners, this introduction to the library provides instruction in foundation research and
identification of potential funders. A tour of the library will follow.
Proposal Writing Basics: December 15
Attendees will learn about the basics of writing a proposal for their non-profit organizations.
Introduction to Finding Funders: December 8, 16, 20
This class provides a hands-on introduction on how to use the center’s comprehensive online
database – the Foundation Directory Online – to research and identify potential funders. The
Foundation Directory Online contains over 100,000 profiles of grantmaking institutions.
How to Approach a Foundation: December 3, 22
Attendees will learn how to initiate contact with potential donors, plan calls and meetings, and
build partnerships with sponsors. This class is intended for fundraisers who have some experience
but are not experts.
