On the state level...
New York State Department of State and Department of Environmental Conservation
The Department of State is accepting applications for their Brownfield Opportunities Area (BOA) program. The BOA program assists municipalities and community-based organizations with revitalization plans, implementation strategies and site assessments for areas affected by Brownfields. An inter-agency partnership between the Department of State and the Department of Environmental Conservation provides communities with technical advice to ensure successful Brownfield redevelopment.

Eligibility: Community-based organizations and municipalities within New York State.

Funding: Up to 90% of total eligible project costs

Deadline: Applications are accepted on a continuous basis; applications received by the Department of State by March 29, 2012 will be evaluated and funding recommendations will be made by November 30.

New York State Energy Research and Development Authority
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is accepting applications for the Agriculture Disaster Energy Efficiency Program. The program aims to assist farms and on-farm producers damaged by Hurricane Irene and/or Tropical Storm Lee. Under the program, funding is available for energy-efficient repair and replacement of damaged electric and natural gas systems and equipment that were damaged during the storms in non-residential facilities.

Eligibility: Eligible applicants include farms located within the counties declared in Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order No. 22. Eligible counties are listed in Table 1 of the Program Opportunity Notice (PON) 2422.

Funding: $4,175,000 is available. Applications will be processed in the order received.

Deadline: April 30, 2012 5:00PM EST or until funds are exhausted.
On the federal level...
National Endowment for the Humanities
The National Endowment for the Humanities is accepting applications for its Preservation Assistance Grants program. Preservation Assistance Grants are designed to help small and mid-sized institutions – such as libraries, museums, and town and county records offices – improve their ability to preserve their humanities collections. These collections may include, but are not limited to: special collections of books and journals; archives and manuscripts; prints and photographs; and decorative and fine art objects. Small and mid-sized institutions that have never received an NEH grant are especially encouraged to apply.

Eligibility: County governments, city or township governments, special district governments, public and state controlled institutions of higher education, federally recognized Native American tribal governments, non-profits with and without a 501 (c)(3) status, and private institutions of higher education.

National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is accepting applications for the Computing Education for the 21st Century (CE21) program. The program aims to build a strong computing research community, a computationally competent 21st century workforce, and a computationally empowered citizenry. The program addresses three interrelated challenges: the significant underproduction of degrees needed for the computing and computing-related workforce, the longstanding under representation of many segments of our population, and the lack of presence of computing in K-12. Thus, the program funds efforts in three tracks: computing and education research, CS 10K proposals, and broadening participation.

On the private level...
Chamber Music America
Chamber Music America is accepting applications for its 2012 Classical Commissioning Program. The program provides grants to U.S.-based presenters and professional contemporary and world music ensembles for the commissioning and performance of new works by American Composers. The program supports works scored for 2-10 musicians performing one per part, composed in any of the musical styles associated with contemporary classical music.

Eligibility: There are two categories of eligibility: ensemble and presenter. For further guidelines on eligibility, see website for details.

Funding: The grants provide a composer’s fee ($5,000 to $20,000, depending on instrumentation and length of work), an honorarium ($1,000) for each member rehearsing the new piece, and copying costs (up to $1,000).

New York State Health Foundation
The New York State Health Foundation (NYSHealth) is seeking grant applications for its Special Projects Fund. The Special Projects Fund explicitly supports projects outside the Foundation’s three strategic priority areas of expanding health insurance coverage, improving the management and prevention of diabetes, and integrating substance use and mental health services. Special projects are considered one-time, non-renewable funding opportunities. In order to submit an application, applicants are required to complete an online inquiry form. The inquiry form will be assessed to determine whether or not the proposed project fits the funding criteria. For more information, please visit their website at www.nyshealth.org.

The Foundation Center has scheduled the following free training classes in
New York City during April 2012:
Grantseeking Basics: April 4, 12
Attendees will learn how the center’s resources can help make them more effective grantseekers.
For beginners, this introduction to the library provides instruction in foundation research and
identification of potential funders. A tour of the library will follow.
Introduction to Finding Funders: April 12, 19
This class provides a hands-on introduction on how to use the center’s comprehensive online
database – the Foundation Directory Online – to research and identify potential funders. The
Foundation Directory Online contains over 100,000 profiles of grantmaking institutions.
How to Approach a Foundation: April 27
Attendees will learn how to initiate contact with potential donors, plan calls and meetings, and build
partnerships with sponsors. This class is intended for fundraisers who have some experience but are
not experts.
Proposal Writing Basics: April 5, 14, 26
Attendees will learn about the basics of writing a proposal for their nonprofit organization.
Proposal Budgeting Basics: April 5, 14, 26
Attendees will learn how to prepare and present a budget in a grant proposal. The session is geared toward novice grant seekers.
