On the state level...

Larry J. Hackman Research Residency Program

The New York State Archives and the Archives Partnership Trust will award grants for qualified applicants to pursue research using historical records in the New York State Archives. The Larry J. Hackman Research Residency Program is intended to support advanced work in New York State history, government or public policy by covering research expenses. It also encourages public dissemination of research products. Applicants must conduct original research at the New York State Archives.

  • Eligibility: Academic and public historians, graduate students, independent researchers and writers, and primary and secondary school teachers. Projects involving alternative uses of the Archives, such as research for multimedia projects, exhibits, documentary films, and historical novels, are welcomed. The topic or area of study must draw on government records in the New York State Archives.

  • Funding: Award amounts range from $100 to $4,500 to cover the costs of travel, lodging, meals, photo duplication, and other research-related expenses, depending on the length of stay at the State Archives and research expenses.

  • Deadline: Applications must be postmarked by January 15, 2013. Proposals will be reviewed by a panel of scholars and archivists familiar with the State Archives and its holdings. Applicants will be informed of the panel’s decision by May 15, 2013.

Empire State Development Division of Science, Technology & Innovation

The goal of the Empire State Development Division of Science, Technology & Innovation (NYSTAR) Matching Grants Leverage Program is to assist New York State research institutions in attracting new federal and private foundation or industry research dollars to New York. NYSTAR reviews and coordinates university requests for matching grants and letters of support for the Administration. These grants leverage resources from federal or private sources, including the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, businesses, industry consortiums, foundations, and other organizations.



On the federal level...

National Institute of Food and Agriculture

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) invites science-based small business firms to submit research applications under this program solicitation entitled “Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) - Phase I, Fiscal Year 2013.” Firms with strong scientific research capabilities in any of the topic areas described in section 8.0 are encouraged to participate. USDA will support high-quality research or research and development (R/R&D) applications containing advanced concepts related to important scientific problems and opportunities that could lead to significant public benefit. Objectives of the SBIR program include stimulating technological innovation in the private sector, strengthening the role of small businesses in meeting Federal research and development needs, increasing private sector commercialization of innovations derived from USDA-supported research and development efforts and fostering and encouraging participation by women-owned and socially and economically disadvantaged small business firms in technological innovation.

National Institutes of Health

The National Institute of Nursing Research seeks research to address the needs of informal caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias in the context of different sociodemographic factors. Research has demonstrated that sociodemographic factors (such as geography, socioeconomic status, education, culture, race, ethnicity, gender, and age) play a role in informal caregivers experiences in providing care for their loved one as well as in managing their own health and well-being. The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement is to 1) develop interventions that address the needs of these caregivers in the context of different sociodemographic factors, and 2) inform the search for such interventions by better understanding or describing the unique experiences, perceptions, knowledge, and caregiver outcomes based on different sociodemographic factors.


On the private level...

NY Community Trust Grant for New Social Work Guidelines

The New York Community Trust has released guidelines for grants that aim to make the social work profession more effective in addressing systemic social problems by integrating education, research, and practice. Projects that meet eligibility requirements must build an evidence base for social work intervention; innovate in the classroom and the field and connect training and research communities; make macro practice a priority and improve training in policy, management, and leadership; and/or support research that helps social workers improve practice and address larger social issues.


The Verizon Foundation

The Verizon Foundation helps people to live healthy, safe and independent lives by addressing disparities in education, health care and sustainability. Since 2000, the Verizon Foundation has invested more than half a billion dollars to improve the communities where Verizon employees work and live. One of the Verizon Foundation’s education programs specifically focuses on increasing student interest and achievement in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The program targets schools in underserved areas, and its aim is to provide training to teachers to innovatively use mobile technology in the classroom to further engage and prepare students for success in the 21st century. In addition, the Verizon Foundation supports an award-winning educational website called Thinkfinity (www.thinkfinity.org) which offers tens of thousands of free, engaging materials for teachers and students. This comprehensive resource includes K-12 lesson plans, in-class activities and videos, all searchable by grade level, keyword or subject.

The Foundation Center

The Foundation Center has scheduled the following free training classes in New York City during September 2012:

Proposal Budgeting Basics:September 5
Attendees will learn how to prepare and present a budget in a grant proposal. This session is geared toward novice grantseekers.

Proposal Writing Basics: September 5
Attendees will learn about the basics of writing a proposal for their nonprofit organization.

Grant-seeking Basics: September 6, 21
Attendees will learn how the Center’s resources help make them more effective grantseekers. For beginners, this introduction to the library provides instruction in foundation research and identification of potential funders. A tour of the library will follow.

How to Approach a Foundation: September 6, 21
Attendees will learn how to initiate contact with potential donors, plan calls and meetings, and build partnerships with sponsors. This class is intended for fundraisers who have some experience but are not experts.

Introduction to Finding Funders: September 25
This class provides a hands-on introduction on how to use the center’s comprehensive online database – The Foundation Directory Online – to research and identify potential funders. The Foundation Directory Online contains over 100,000 profiles of grant-making institutions.
