On the state level...
New York State Energy Research and Development Authority
New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Low-rise Residential New Construction Programs incorporate the New York ENERGY STAR® Certified Homes Program as well as NYSERDA’s offer of eligibility for certain gut rehabilitation projects to participate and receive the alternative New York Energy $mart designation. These Programs are designed and intended to encourage the construction of single-family homes and low-rise residential dwelling units which operate more energy efficiently, are more durable, and provide a healthier environment for their occupants than would otherwise be achieved. Details of these programs are published in NYSERDA’s Program Opportunity Notice (PON) 2309.

Eligibility:
To be eligible to participate and receive incentives, the dwelling unit(s) must be located in one of the following electric or gas utility service territories: Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation, Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc., New York State Electric & Gas Corporation, National Fuel Gas, National Grid, Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc., or Rochester Gas & Electric Corporation. Other utility service territories may be added at the discretion of NYSERDA.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is continuously accepting applications for Technical Assistance Grants (TAGs). TAGs are a citizen participation tool available to eligible community groups to increase public awareness and understanding of remedial activities taking place in their community. TAGs, in the form of State Assistance Contracts, are available to eligible community groups for the purpose of obtaining independent technical assistance in interpreting existing environmental information about an eligible “significant threat” site being remediated in the State Superfund Program or Brownfield Cleanup Program.

Eligibility:
Eligible community groups must be non-responsible parties incorporated as not-for-profit corporations under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. An eligible community group must certify that its membership represents the interest of the community affected by the site, and that its members’ health, economic well-being, or enjoyment of the environment are potentially threatened by the site.

Funding is limited to $50,000 per site.

On the federal level...
National Endowment for the Arts
The Challenge America Fast-Track opportunity offers support to small and mid-sized organizations for projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations – those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability. Age alone (e.g., youth, seniors) does not qualify a group as underserved; at least one of the underserved characteristics noted above also must be present. Grants are available for professional arts programming and for projects that emphasize the potential of the arts in community development.

Eligibility:
State, county, city, or township governments; special district governments; independent school districts; public, private, tribal (Federally recognized) and state-controlled institutions of higher education; and nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS.

Award amounts will not exceed $10,000 per project.

National Institutes of Health
The Science Education Drug Abuse Partnership Award program has announced funding for the development and evaluation of innovative model programs and materials for enhancing knowledge and understanding of neuroscience and the neurobiological mechanisms of drug abuse and addiction among K-12 students, the general public, health care practitioners, and other groups. The program seeks to 1) provide education to youth, the general public and others on neuroscience and drug abuse, and 2) ensure that highly trained scientists will be available in adequate numbers to address the nation’s research needs in neuroscience and drug abuse research. The award provides support for the formation of partnerships between scientists and educators, media experts, community leaders, and other interested organizations for the development and evaluation of programs and materials that will enhance knowledge and understanding of science related to drug abuse.

Public, private, and state-controlled institutions of higher education; Hispanic-serving institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities; Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; nonprofits with 501(c)(3) IRS Status; nonprofits without 501(c)(3) IRS Status (Other than institutions of higher education); state, county, city, tribal, and special district governments; Indian/Native American tribally designated organizations; independent school districts; public housing authorities/Indian housing authorities; U.S. territory or possession; regional organizations; and faith-based or community-based organizations.

On the private level...
The Fisher House Foundation, Newman’s Own, and Military Times
Fisher House Foundation, a private-public partnership that supports America’s military in times of need, is accepting proposals from nonprofit organizations for the 2013 Newman’s Own Awards for creative ideas to improve the quality of life for service members and their families. Newman’s Own, Fisher House Foundation, and the Military Times (Gannett Government Media Corporation) join together in presenting $100,000 in grants to the most creative military quality of life improvement plans.

Eligibility:
To be eligible, an organization must be comprised primarily of volunteers or be a not-for-profit 501(c)3 supporting Active Duty, National Guard, or Reserve unit(s) and/or Veterans and their families. Funds may not be used to pay salaries or wages.

Awards will be made up to $25,000.
Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation
The Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation supports domestic pets by providing financial support through their grant program for animal welfare organizations, pet rescue and rehabilitation organizations, and therapeutic pet programs. Funding is aimed at preventing pet overpopulation, providing food and medical expenses for animals, and other needs required by pets. Build-A-Bear Workshop prioritizes efforts that help dogs and cats; however, the program also supports programs that work with horses, rabbits, birds, and reptiles. Farm animals and wildlife are not eligible for this program. The direct support grants can be used only for spay/neuter expenses, medical expenses, micro-chipping, food, and cages.

Eligibility:
Applicants must be a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code, and “not a private foundation,” within the meaning of Code Sections 509(a)(1) or 509(a)(2). In addition, grant recipients must certify that they are not a supporting organization within the meaning of Code Section 509(a)(3). Quasi-governmental organizations such as civic animal shelters through 501(c)(3) organizations that have been set up to provide financial support for such an entity are also eligible. Examples include “friends,” groups, or similar entities whose role is to raise funds on behalf of the civic entity.

Funding:
Grants can range from $1,000 to $5,000, with $1,500 being the average award amount.

Attendees will learn how the Center’s resources help make them more effective grantseekers. For beginners, this introduction to the library provides instruction in foundation research and identification of potential funders. A tour of the library will follow.
Introduction to Finding Funders: May 2, 4
This class provides a hands-on introduction on how to use the center’s comprehensive online database – The Foundation Directory Online – to research and identify potential funders. The Foundation Directory Online contains over 100,000 profiles of grant-making institutions.
Proposal Writing Basics: May 28
Attendees will learn about the basics of writing a proposal for their nonprofit organization.
Proposal Budgeting Basics:May 28
Attendees will learn how to prepare and present a budget in a grant proposal. This session is geared toward novice grantseekers.
How to Approach a Foundation:May 22
Attendees will learn how to initiate contact with potential donors, plan calls and meetings, and build partnerships with sponsors. This class is intended for fundraisers who have some experience but are not experts.
