LEGISLATIVE ACTION
The Legislature provides a total of $3,722,000 in additional funding to
the Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research. Additional
funding was provided to establish two new programs including $2,000,000
for the James D. Watson Investigator Program and $1,500,000 for the
College Centers for Applied Research and Technology Program.
In addition, the Legislature provides $222,000 in funding to the Office
of Science, Technology and Academic Research to help administer the
GenNYsis Program.
Article VII
The Legislature provides $2,000,000 in funding for the creation of the
James D. Watson Investigator Program to recognize early career scientists
in the life sciences working at New York State research institutions.
These awards will be given to recent Ph.D graduates who become full-time
staff members of a research program at an academic, public, or
not-for-profit private research institution in New York State ($200,000
award over a two year period). The award will support the research
activities of the recipients, including salaries, research support
personnel and equipment purchases.
The Legislature also created a Centers for Applied Research and
Technology Program for non-doctoral level colleges. These Centers,
similar to Centers for Advanced Technology, will promote the collaboration
of business and industry with college research. These Centers will be
funded by a new $1,500,000 appropriation.
